Accra: Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has cautioned members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against getting drawn into discussions about who should lead the party into the 2028 general election. Speaking on The KSM Show on Friday, August 6, 2026, the Vice President emphasized that the NDC's immediate priority should be fulfilling the mandate given to the party by Ghanaians rather than engaging in premature succession politics.
According to Ghana Web, Professor Opoku-Agyemang was responding to questions about whether she would consider contesting the NDC's flagbearership ahead of the next presidential election. She asserted that the party's chances of retaining power would largely depend on the performance of the current administration and the level of support members provide President John Dramani Mahama as he leads the government.
The Vice President warned that beginning internal discussions about the party's next presidential candidate at this stage could divert attention from the government's responsibilities. She expressed concerns that such activities would be a betrayal of the electorate's expectations and urged party members to focus on supporting the government's current agenda.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang urged NDC supporters and party members to concentrate on helping the administration deliver on its promises to Ghanaians. She emphasized the importance of fulfilling the dreams of the country and focusing on completing the tasks at hand.
Reflecting on the NDC's return to power in the 2024 general election, she highlighted the victory as a result of years of political work and a demanding campaign. Her comments arrive amid growing speculation within the NDC over potential contenders for the 2028 flagbearership, though the party has yet to formally open the process for selecting its next presidential candidate.
