Accra: Lawyer and energy expert Lom-Nuku Ahlijah says the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa highlights deeper challenges in African unity and cooperation. He expressed concern that despite decades of liberation struggles, Africans are still being forced to flee instability within the continent.
According to Ghana Web, Ahlijah remarked on JoyNews' AM Show about the unfortunate situation of evacuating Africans from another African country, stating, "This is not the vision of continental integration." His comments came in response to Ghana's decision, announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to repatriate citizens affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Ahlijah drew parallels between Ghana's response and the American "leave no one behind" doctrine, noting that Ghana is striving for a similar approach despite its limited resources. "We don't have the capacity of the United States, but we cannot abandon our citizens," he emphasized. He also called on African states to enhance regional protection frameworks to avert future crises.
