Accra: An INTERPOL Red Notice issued against Kenneth Ofori-Atta, a former Minister of Finance, has been deleted permanently, his lawyer announced on Saturday. A statement signed by Mr. Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo, Counsel for Ofori-Atta, confirmed that the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL's Files (CCF) had notified his client of the decision.
According to Ghana News Agency, the CCF informed Kenneth Ofori-Atta on February 13, 2026, that during its 135th Session on February 4, 2026, it found the Red Notice issued against him to be of a predominantly political character. The notice was deemed non-compliant with INTERPOL's rules, leading to its permanent deletion from INTERPOL's files. The CCF's thorough review concluded that the data registered by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) of Ghana did not adhere to INTERPOL's regulations and ordered its removal from their information systems.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has acknowledged the CCF's decision regarding the Red Notice initiated at Ghana's request for Mr. Ofori-Atta. The OSP stated that summons issued by the Criminal Division of the High Court in Accra had been dispatched for service in the United States, demanding his presence to respond to multiple criminal charges. Efforts to ensure his appearance are ongoing through established legal and diplomatic channels.
The OSP is actively pursuing the extradition of the former Finance Minister for trial in the ongoing case. Ken Ofori-Atta, along with six others, has been arraigned at a High Court in Accra on allegations of scheming to improperly secure a procurement contract for Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited, which resulted in a financial loss of GHS1.4 billion.
