Kumasi: Nkawie Senior High Technical School (SHTS) has received a two-year ban following allegations of inciting chaos, leading to the destruction of seats at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
According to Ghana Web, investigations conducted by the Sports and Colleges Federation revealed that students from Nkawie SHTS initiated attacks on other students, causing a surge of chaos at the venue. This unrest escalated to the point where students began removing stadium seats and throwing them at their opponents, resulting in significant damage.
The report further indicated that repairing the damaged seats would cost the nation approximately GHS1.5 million, a sum likely to be covered by taxpayers. Sporty FM reported on X on January 4, 2026, that Nkawie SHTS has been barred from all sporting activities for two years by the Schools and Colleges Federation due to their role in the altercation.
The incident took place during the 2026 Inter-Schools competition for Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region, where chaotic scenes broke out at the stadium. In a viral video, students were seen engaged in fights and hurling objects across the stands. Attempts by student cadets to restore order did not immediately quell the tensions.
An eyewitness highlighted the mayhem and the resulting destruction of national property, attributing the chaos to inadequate security arrangements at the event.
