Krachi east: The Krachi East Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has highlighted the importance of integrity and accountability as fundamental components for maintaining a vibrant democracy. The emphasis was placed during a civic education session held with 151 students at Oti Senior High Technical School in Dambai.
According to Ghana News Agency, the event was themed 'Building Integrity through Civic Engagement: Rule of Law and the Fight against Corruption' and was part of a larger initiative funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) with co-funding from the European Union. Mr. Clement Kwesi Mamadu, Krachi East Director of the NCCE, stated that democracy requires more than just laws; it demands that citizens uphold honesty, responsibility, and ethical standards.
Mr. Mamadu encouraged students to adopt integrity early on, emphasizing that the values they internalize now will influence their future roles as leaders and public servants. "Accountability means answering your actions and integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. These are the qualities that build trust between the people and their leaders," he remarked.
Nana Boame Robert, Oti Regional Director of the NCCE, pointed out that the initiative aims to empower young individuals to actively engage in governance and national development. He warned that corruption thrives in environments where citizens are apathetic and urged students to become catalysts for positive change in their communities.
The program also included a presentation by Mr. Joshua Borah from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Oti Region. He addressed issues of ethical leadership, conflict of interest, and influence peddling, advising students to avoid misusing public office and to uphold transparency while resisting corrupt practices.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Mamadu reiterated the NCCE's dedication to continuous civic education in schools across Krachi East. He encouraged students to act as ambassadors of integrity, promoting accountability and respect for the rule of law in their homes and communities.
This engagement is part of the NCCE's ongoing initiatives to bolster civic awareness among the youth, aiming to protect Ghana's democratic achievements through a generation committed to honesty, responsibility, and public service.
