Accra: The Meridian Presbytery Synod Moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG), Rev. Samuel Senanu Asieni, has described the state of Ghana's environmental sanitation as 'appalling', and therefore urged the government, faith-based organizations, and other relevant stakeholder institutions to put in place pragmatic advocacy and disciplinary measures to curb the canker.
According to Ghana Web, Rev. Samuel Asieni emphasized the need for society to rise to its moral and religious stewardship responsibilities by addressing the pollution of water bodies, indiscriminate waste disposal, and the unhygienic state of public facilities. He stressed that enhancing decency in the country's environmental sanitation is crucial for ensuring a healthy and productive society.
Rev. Asieni delivered his remarks during the 13th Extraordinary Synod of the EPCG Meridian Presbytery held at Adenta in Accra. The event, themed 'Cleanliness is next to Godliness! Keep Clean,' gathered over 200 participants, including 130 delegates from 20 districts and parishes of the Meridian Presbytery.
He called on the Church to act as a beacon of light, advocating against improper waste disposal and promoting hygienic lifestyles. He urged Christian faith stewards to embody values of moral purity, integrity, and uprightness to foster effective behavioral change towards a cleaner environment.
Rev. Dr. Mrs. Vida Felicity Asima, District Pastor of EPCG North Legon in Accra, presented an exposition on the Synod theme. She suggested the establishment of national environmental sanitation days in educational institutions and faith-based organizations to encourage advocacy and sanitation initiatives through cleaning exercises.
Rev. Dr. Mrs. Asima highlighted the importance of 'cleanliness' in maintaining a dirt-free environment and 'Godliness' in practicing moral virtues and a God-centered life. She appealed to the government to provide the necessary resources to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies for enhancing environmental health and sanitation.
