Accra: The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is urgently seeking accommodation for 140 families of police personnel affected by a devastating fire at the Accra Central Police Barracks. The fire, which occurred last night, left the barracks severely damaged, impacting the lives of numerous police families.
According to Ghana Web, the IGP made a heartfelt appeal for immediate support, revealing that about 100 of the affected families are currently being housed in two large conference rooms at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters. Meanwhile, 40 families have temporarily sought refuge with relatives. The police administration has stepped in to provide two square meals a day for the affected families, ensuring their basic needs are met.
Mr. Yohuno emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the administration plans to rent hotels and guest houses as a temporary solution for the displaced personnel and their families. He also noted the significant loss of property, as many officers were away on official duties during the fire. Those present at the time managed to escape with only the clothes they were wearing, underscoring the rapid and unexpected nature of the incident.
Fortunately, there were no human casualties reported in the inferno. The IGP has tasked the Estates Department of the Ghana Police Service with finding permanent housing solutions for the affected families. The appeal for assistance is particularly directed at landlords and estate developers in the nearby areas of Oyibi and Oyibi Down, given their proximity to the barracks.
The Accra Central Police Barracks, built over a century ago by British colonial rulers, has long served as a home for members of the then Gold Coast Police Force. The fire has not only displaced many families but has also highlighted the urgent need for updated and safer housing facilities for police personnel and their families.
