Anaji: The Human Rights and Development Services (HURDS), a non-governmental organisation, has conducted a sensitisation exercise for more than 100 pupils at Anaji Key Primary School in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality. The initiative aimed to educate the pupils about their rights and responsibilities as citizens, as well as when and how to respond in situations that may threaten their safety.
According to Ghana News Agency, Ms Eugenia Dery, Programme Officer at HURDS, stated that understanding their rights could help children distinguish between silence and safety. The event was part of HURDS' Child Rights and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Sensitisation Programme, executed under the AWDF KASA Project, which aims to help pupils appreciate their fundamental rights and recognise signs of sexual and gender-based violence, including online abuse. Additionally, the programme informs them about safe channels for reporting such incidents.
The session was supported by the Community Development Office of Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Girl Child Coordinator. It focused on building pupils' confidence, addressing the culture of silence, and reinforcing the message that every child's voice matters. "When children know their rights, they are better protected," Ms Dery emphasized.
