Ankara: Former Black Stars forward, Augustine Ahinful, has opened up on a painful experience from his playing days, revealing how a trusted teammate allegedly turned against him during his time in Turkey.
According to Ghana Web, Ahinful reflected on his spell at Turkish side MKE Ankaragc, where he insisted he did not suffer major setbacks in Europe, except for what he describes as a personal betrayal within the squad. "One issue that more or less I was sad about was when my own teammate who had transitioned to become a coach of the same club, turned against me," he said. Ahinful further explained how the situation unfolded within the dressing room at the time.
Ahinful shared that the teammate in question was the captain of the team. "He was our captain of the team. We had a German coach, things were not going well, so the coach was asked to go," he recalled. The dynamics changed when the former captain briefly took charge. Instead of support, Ahinful faced disappointment.
"Temporarily, the president asked him to take over, and when he did, he turned against me. This was somebody who, years back, when I was injured, he was begging me to come and play because the club needed me to score. I didn't know what changed," Ahinful explained. He described the experience as emotionally difficult, leaving him questioning the behavior of someone he once considered close.
"For me, I think that's something that made me feel a bit sad because of that behaviour," he added. Despite the setback, Ahinful had a successful career at Ankaragc, playing over a hundred games, scoring 45 times, and assisting 15 times.
