Sekondi: A storey building at Pariscoa, a suburb of Sekondi in the Western Region, has collapsed following a mudslide triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall on Sunday, June 21.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Emma Akosua Adu Boafo, Head of Policy Planning, Monitoring, and Research at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), confirmed the incident. She stated that the building's occupants noticed cracks during the heavy rains on Friday and evacuated before the collapse occurred on Sunday, ensuring no casualties were recorded.
Madam Boafo mentioned that NADMO was working with officials from the Metro Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other stakeholders to demolish the entire building to ensure safety in the area. Authorities plan to conduct assessments and integrity tests on all structures within the vicinity to prevent future disasters.
She advised property owners and developers to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals before construction, emphasizing that factors such as rain, noise, vibration, and soil composition could lead to building collapses.
