Accra: Presidential Special Envoy to the Caribbean Region Kwasi Kyei Darkwah (KKD) has appealed for empathy and clemency for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. During an interview on Starr FM's 'Starr Chat' with Bola Ray, KKD expressed his concern over the ridicule directed at Wontumi, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence following his conviction in an illegal mining (galamsey) case.
According to Ghana Web, KKD recounted a recent conversation where he cautioned a friend against mocking Wontumi's predicament. He emphasized the uncertainty of future challenges and warned against deriding others in difficult situations. KKD shared, "One of our friends was laughing at Wontumi to me, and I told him: 'No, be careful. You have so many years ahead of you. You don't know what you can also do.'"
KKD acknowledged his confidence in his own integrity, stating he was certain he would not engage in corruption. However, he admitted the unpredictability of life's circumstances, choosing instead to approach such situations with consideration. He expressed his support for mercy towards Chairman Wontumi, whom he referred to as a brother, and urged others to exhibit compassion. "I know I will not be corrupt. That I know. But I don't know what I may also do. So, what we must do is stop bragging about the money people have and say our brother did wrong and we must beg for him," KKD stated.
