Volta region: A team from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in collaboration with paragliding pilots and the Volta Development Forum (VDF), has completed a feasibility assessment of highland destinations in the Volta Region to identify new sites for the adventure sport.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Daniel Agboka-Dzegede, Executive Director of VDF, a not-for-profit development agency, stated that the team assessed the Adaklu and Gemi mountains as potential destinations. This exercise is part of preparations for the 2027 Mega Volta Easter Project, which aims to showcase the region's natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The assessment also seeks to promote regional development and economic growth through sustainable tourism practices. Mr. Agboka-Dzegede mentioned that the initiative is expected to create opportunities for local communities and contribute to the region's economic development.
The team is planning trial flights and has identified four possible landing sites at Helekpe, Tsrefe, Goefe, and the Volta Resource Centre. This is being done in collaboration with the Adaklu District Assembly, under the leadership of Mr. Jerry Ameko, the host district.
The project, which began in 2025, is anticipated to enhance the region's tourism potential, making it an attractive destination for both tourists and locals. Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, Chief Executive Officer of GTA, emphasized that the initiative aims to expand and diversify paragliding activities in the country, reducing pressure on existing sites.
Paragliding, an unpowered, foot-launched recreational adventure sport, involves a lightweight, free-flying glider aircraft known as a paraglider. It utilizes a non-rigid fabric wing that inflates through the 'ram-air' effect, allowing pilots to soar, gain altitude using air currents, and land safely on foot.
