Akosombo: The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced that investigations into the recent fire outbreak at the GRIDCo substation in Akosombo will be concluded within two weeks. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Energy Ministry's Spokesperson Richmond Rockson cautioned the public and political actors against politicizing the incident, stressing the need for a thorough and impartial probe.
According to Ghana Web, Rockson explained that the decision for the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to step aside is an administrative measure intended to ensure transparency and independence in the investigation. He highlighted that the minister has constituted a seven-member committee chaired by William Amuna, a former GRIDCo CEO with over four decades of experience in the energy sector.
Rockson stated, 'It is only proper that you allow the CEO to step aside so that the team can conduct its work without any influence or control. This ensures that all relevant persons can be engaged freely and that the committee has access to the necessary information.' The committee includes representatives from key institutions such as the Ghana National Fire Service, Energy Commission of Ghana, National Security, and civil society groups. Their mandate is to investigate the cause of the fire incident at the Akosombo substation and recommend appropriate actions based on their findings.
Rockson emphasized that the committee has been given a strict two-week timeline to complete its work and submit a report. Reacting to whether the findings will be made public, the spokesperson indicated that the decision rests with the government and will depend on the nature of the report. 'Sometimes, depending on the findings, the report can be made public. In other instances, portions may need to be reviewed, or a white paper may be issued instead,' he added.
