Kumasi:Residents in certain communities of Kumasi will face planned power outages from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 29, 2026. This development is due to a major transmission line upgrade project being carried out by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to Ghana Web, the outages are scheduled between 900 a.m. and 500 p.m. on the affected days to allow for the safe installation of transmission conductors on towers along the 161kV Anwomaso-Ahodwo (K1-K2) transmission line. GRIDCo and ECG announced the project in a joint statement on Thursday, October 29, 2026, noting that the project is already 70 percent complete and is expected to conclude by the end of November.
The statement highlighted that the project is at a critical phase involving the stringing of transmission conductors, necessitating temporary power interruptions to ensure the safety of engineers, project personnel, and the public. Communities along the transmission route will be affected as work progresses through different sections.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will release a detailed schedule indicating the areas to be impacted and the specific outage dates, allowing consumers to plan accordingly. The project is being supervised by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and aims to enhance electricity supply reliability in Kumasi and its surrounding areas.
GRIDCo and ECG acknowledged the inconvenience the planned outages would cause to households, businesses, and other electricity consumers. They urged the public, especially the affected communities, for patience, understanding, and cooperation during this period. Despite the temporary disruptions, the companies emphasized that the upgrade is a significant investment in strengthening the transmission network and improving the reliability of electricity supply in the Ashanti Region. They also apologized for the inconvenience and assured the public of their commitment to completing the project safely and on schedule.
