Accra: President John Dramani Mahama announced plans to establish three new technical universities in the Bono East, Oti, and Savanna regions, aiming to improve access to tertiary education in underserved areas. According to Ghana News Agency, the government has initiated international partnerships to develop a university in Kintampo, located in the Bono East Region, and another in Jasikan, Oti Region. Additionally, a grant from China has been secured to establish a public university in Damongo, further enhancing educational opportunities in these regions. President Mahama unveiled these initiatives during his presentation of the State of the Nation Address to Parliament. He emphasized that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is a crucial element of his strategy to tackle youth unemployment and promote skills development. Furthermore, six Regional TVET Centres of Excellence are planned to be constructed nationwide to equip young people with practical skills that meet the demands of the e volving labor market. The ongoing review of the national curriculum aims to align it with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Future of Education and Skills framework, ensuring that TVET education remains adaptive and resilient. President Mahama also highlighted the implementation of the Free Tertiary Education Policy for Persons with Disabilities, which benefits all eligible individuals with disabilities enrolled in tertiary institutions across the nation. He stressed that education for learners with special needs is a moral right and a strategic investment promoting equity and social cohesion. In recognition of this, the amended GETFund Act has established a sustainable funding framework to implement Free Education for learners with special needs, starting from the 2026 academic year.
