Government Reduces Expenditure After Missing Revenue Targets, Says Gideon Boako

Accra: The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Finance Committee, Dr. Gideon Boako, has accused the government of significantly cutting down on spending due to poor revenue performance during the first quarter of 2026. During a parliamentary debate on Tuesday, Tano North MP Dr. Boako highlighted the impact of weak revenue mobilisation on the government's ability to maintain its expenditure levels, particularly affecting capital investments.

According to Ghana Web, Dr. Boako revealed that government revenue missed its target by 4.5% in the first quarter of 2026, prompting a reduction in government expenditure by 29%. He further pointed out that in 2025, government revenue fell short by 2.2%, leading to an overall reduction in government expenditure by 13% and a specific decrease in capital expenditure by 13.8%.

Dr. Boako emphasized the necessity for the Finance Ministry to enhance revenue mobilisation efforts to ensure that the government has adequate resources to fund development projects. He cautioned against the reliance on expenditure cuts and additional borrowing, urging a more robust approach to revenue collection to support the country's economic growth and infrastructural development.
