Accra: The Ministry of Health has unveiled a strategic initiative aimed at reducing maternal mortality, in response to President John Dramani Mahama's mandate to safeguard the lives of pregnant women throughout the nation.
According to Ghana Web, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, asserted on August 17, 2026, that the government considers the reduction of maternal deaths to be a moral duty and a collective national obligation. She highlighted that the maternal mortality ratio in Ghana has decreased by 75.2% from 2000 to 2023, indicating significant progress but also emphasizing the need for further action.
Dr. Ayensu-Danquah reiterated President Mahama's dedication to prioritizing maternal health, driven by his belief that no woman should face mortality while giving birth. "This sad reality is driving the renewed national effort led by President John Dramani Mahama through the Ministry of Health to help address this and save the lives of mothers," she stated. She further noted, "...President Mahama, as a father and leader of our nation, has been unequivocal on this issue: no woman should lose her life while giving life."
The newly launched Maternal Mortality Action and Response Plan (MMARP) aims to expedite the reduction of maternal deaths across Ghana. The plan focuses on enhancing emergency obstetric care, refining referral systems, and increasing accountability within health facilities to ensure that every woman can safely navigate pregnancy and childbirth.
