Accra: The government, represented by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has officially sworn in the members of the Executive Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Ghana. The ceremony took place on May 12, 2026, marking a significant step in enhancing the country's educational and cultural sectors.
According to Ghana Web, the newly appointed UNESCO executive committee will be chaired by Rev. Fr. Daniel Kwadwo Lenwah, SVD, with other distinguished members including Prof. Osman Tahidu Damba, Prof. Stephen A. Ayidiya, Prof. Eliasu Mumuni, Prof. Abigail Gura, and Prof. Kodzo Gavua. Additional members of the committee are Prof. Ago Kwashi Macgranaky Quaye, Audrey Naana Abayena, Jamila Jakalia, and Musah Abdallah.
In his address, Haruna Iddrisu congratulated the committee members and expressed confidence in their ability to enhance Ghana's education sector. He emphasized the importance of promoting quality and inclusive education, supporting scientific research and innovation, preserving Ghana's cultural heritage, and empowering the youth through skills development and digital literacy.
The minister outlined the committee's responsibilities, which include strengthening partnerships for sustainable development and advancing peace, tolerance, and intercultural dialogue. Additionally, he extended an invitation to UNESCO's Director-General, Dr. Khaled El-Enany, to participate in the 2026 Literacy Day Observation, coinciding with Ghana's 70th independence anniversary celebrations.
