Accra: Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician, Yaw Sarpong, has reportedly passed away. The musician’s death was confirmed by artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Further details regarding the cause of death are yet to be disclosed.
According to Ghana Web, Yaw Sarpong had been a prominent figure in the music industry for nearly five decades. He released his first album, “Adesrede,” in 1981 and went on to compose several hit songs, such as ‘Awurade Kasa,’ ‘Tie Obiaa,’ and ‘Wo Haw Ne Hwan.’ He was also the founder of the Asomafo gospel group, which significantly influenced Akan gospel music in Ghana.
In October 2020, Yaw Sarpong was involved in a motor accident on the Accra-Kumasi highway, which resulted in injuries to him, his family, and team members. They all survived the incident. However, in 2023, he suffered a stroke and had been ill since. A video of his colleague Maame Tiwaa praying for his healing went viral in 2024, revealing his health struggles. Despite his frail condition, he made a rare public appearance in April 2024 to perform before a congregation.
Yaw Sarpong’s contributions to music were recognized at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, where he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, received by Maame Tiwaa. However, Maame Tiwaa’s death in December 2025 shocked the gospel industry, and reports indicated that the news was withheld from him due to concerns about its impact on his health.
