Kintampo: A head-on collision between a cargo truck and a bus on the Kintampo-Tamale highway in the early hours of Good Friday has resulted in the death of nine individuals, with 27 others critically injured. The accident occurred at around 0300 hours near Suronuase, a community in the Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region, when a passenger bus attempted to overtake two vehicles, lost control, and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with a truck loaded with tomatoes.
According to Ghana News Agency, the bus, identified by its registration number GS-2564-20, was en route to Widana in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region, while the truck, bearing registration number GR-4958-K, was traveling from the opposite direction. Residents in the area have expressed concerns about the condition of portions of the highway, which they believe contributed to the tragic accident.
The deceased have been taken to the Kintampo Municipal Hospital mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at the hospital. Mr. Isaac Donkor, the Kintampo Municipal Chief Executive, visited the scene to extend condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the government. During a media interview, Mr. Donkor highlighted the poor condition of portions of the highway and urged the Ghana Highway Authority to address the issues to prevent future incidents.
Mr. Donkor noted that the location of the crash is a known accident-prone area, stating, 'This is about the fifth time a crash has occurred at that spot.' The incident has left the community of Suronuase in mourning, renewing public concern over the state of the Kintampo-Tamale highway.
