Accra: The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has cautioned households against keeping gas cylinders in kitchens, warning that the practice poses serious safety risks. Mr Paul Ofoe Onyame, Station Officer I at the GNFS Headquarters in Accra, emphasized the dangers associated with storing gas cylinders in enclosed spaces, particularly highlighting the potential hazards in the event of a gas leak or mechanical fault.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Onyame noted that many residents continued to store gas cylinders in kitchens, unknowingly putting their lives and properties at risk. He advised that gas cylinders should be kept in well-ventilated areas outside kitchens to help reduce the risk of fire outbreaks and explosions.
Mr Onyame also urged users to regularly inspect their gas hoses and replace them at least once every year to prevent leakages. He further cautioned against overfilling gas cylinders, explaining that cylinders required adequate space to allow for expansion under pressure. 'Filling your cylinder to the brim is extremely dangerous and must be avoided,' he stressed.
Touching on the use of mobile phones around gas cylinders, Mr Onyame advised the public to exercise caution, noting that mobile devices should be kept away from gas sources, especially during cooking, to minimise the risk of ignition. He called on households to prioritise safety by observing basic fire prevention measures to help protect lives and property.
