Wenchi: The Wenchi Municipal Assembly (WMA) in the Bono Region has unveiled plans to build a modern singeing plant at the Wenchi slaughterhouse. This development comes in response to a report by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) highlighting poor sanitary conditions at the facility.
According to Ghana News Agency, the report underscored the deteriorating state of the slaughterhouse, where butchers were found using discarded vehicle tyres to singe slaughtered animals. This practice has raised significant concerns regarding public health and environmental safety.
Miss Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive, made the announcement during the Assembly's General Meeting in Wenchi. She stated that renovation work has already begun at the abattoir to enhance conditions at the site.
Miss Gyamfi elaborated that the Assembly has approved and budgeted for the establishment of the modern singeing plant. This facility will be equipped with a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) system, allowing butchers to singe animals in a safer and more hygienic manner. The initiative is part of the Assembly's broader commitment to improving environmental health and ensuring the safety of meat processed at the abattoir.
The MCE emphasized that the project aims to eliminate the use of worn-out vehicle tyres and other unsafe materials for singeing animals, a practice that has triggered concern among residents and health authorities.
Mr Cosmos Goodman, Chairman of the Environmental Health Sub-Committee of the Assembly and Assembly Member for the Tromeso Electoral Area, praised the Assembly's planned project. He voiced concern about the unhygienic practices of some chop bar operators and food vendors who singe animals in open spaces within the municipality.
Mr Goodman indicated that the construction of the modern singeing plant would enhance sanitation standards and promote public health in the area.
