Accra: The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has launched its 2026 GhIE Engineering Excellence Awards with the opening of nominations for awardees beginning from September 10 to September 30. The awards aim to celebrate outstanding contributions to engineering practice, innovation, leadership, and national development under the theme 'Celebrating Engineering Excellence for a Resilient and Prosperous Ghana.'
According to Ghana News Agency, the awards will acknowledge individuals, teams, institutions, and organizations whose work creates measurable public value. The categories include individual excellence, innovation and technology advancement, sector-specific excellence, public impact and policy, and organizational and team excellence. Mr. Ludwig Annang Hesse, President of GhIE, emphasized that the awards aim to elevate the standard of engineering practice by identifying exemplary contributors and inspiring others through their stories and achievements.
Mr. Hesse highlighted the importance of recognizing exceptional achievements across the engineering profession and encouraging sustainable engineering practices. He stressed the need to celebrate innovation, research, and technological advancement while recognizing young engineers and women in the field for their contributions. He also urged attendees to think beyond the present and consider the future of Ghana's infrastructure and innovation landscape.
Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Works, Housing, and Water Resources, conveyed the Government's commitment to partnering with GhIE under President John Dramani Mahama's leadership. The government aims to enforce the Engineering Council Act to ensure competent professionals undertake engineering works and promote local content in public housing projects. Mr. Ibrahim emphasized the importance of linking academia, industry, and practice to prepare engineers for the future of Ghana.
The awards scheme aims to celebrate Ghanaian engineers whose innovations address local challenges, showcasing impactful engineering projects that deliver value for money. The initiative is expected to inspire young engineers to pursue excellence and recognize the media's role in raising public awareness of engineering contributions. Mr. Ibrahim congratulated GhIE on the initiative and expressed his support for their efforts.
