Accra: The Ghana Tourism Authority Ex Staff Association (GHATEX), the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) have launched a comprehensive road safety initiative aimed at enhancing travel conditions for tourists across the nation. The newly introduced Road Travel Safety and Tourism in Ghana Project focuses on promoting responsible road use, mitigating travel-related risks, and fostering collaboration among key institutions involved in tourism and road safety, thereby boosting confidence in Ghana's tourism sector.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, emphasized the importance of road safety as a fundamental component of destination development and visitor satisfaction during the launch event in Accra. She highlighted that the tourism experience in Ghana begins the moment visitors arrive, and ensuring their safe and comfortable movement to various destinations is crucial to their perception of the country. Mrs. Houadjeto stated, "As we continue to position Ghana as the preferred tourism destination in West Africa, we must recognize that safety is one of the strongest assets any destination can offer."
Mrs. Houadjeto further noted that the increasing number of tourists participating in events like 'December in GH' underscores the critical nature of road safety for the tourism industry. She stressed that when visitors feel secure on the roads, they are more likely to extend their stay, explore more of the country, and recommend Ghana to others. She called for a collective effort from government agencies, private sector operators, and road users to ensure responsible conduct on the roads.
Mr. Abraham Amaliba, Chief Executive Officer of the NRSA, described the initiative as timely and aligned with national efforts to reduce road traffic incidents. He outlined the multifaceted approach required for effective road safety management, which includes education, enforcement, engineering, evaluation, and emergency response. Mr. Amaliba highlighted the need for strengthened enforcement of traffic regulations, modernization of infrastructure, and improved driver training and certification.
Madam Adeline Boateng, President of GHATEX, explained that the association initiated the project in response to the growing importance of road safety in tourism growth and travel decisions. GHATEX, established in 2023 with support from the GTA, consists of retired staff committed to sustainable tourism development through advocacy and partnerships. Madam Boateng identified several factors affecting road travel in Ghana, such as poor road conditions, speeding, inadequate signage, and enforcement challenges, and emphasized the association's efforts to educate the public and promote safer road practices.
The project aims to bring together public institutions, private sector organizations, and tourism stakeholders in a concerted effort to improve road safety awareness and support the growth of both domestic and international tourism. Madam Boateng called on the media, development partners, government institutions, and private sector actors to join in the efforts to position Ghana as a safe and desirable tourism destination.
