Johannesburg: Ghanaian Member of Parliament Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has been elected as the 2nd Deputy President of the Pan African Parliament in Johannesburg, South Africa. She secured the position through a landslide vote, becoming the first female representative from the West African Caucus to hold the role in the history of Pan-African parliamentary politics.
According to Ghana Web, the announcement was made by South Dayi Member of Parliament Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor in a post on X, where he described the outcome as emphatic. Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, who is the MP for Klottey Korle, won by a margin of 131 votes to 51. Dafeamekpor noted that this position is equivalent to a 2nd Deputy Speaker of the Pan African Parliament.
Beyond the personal achievement, the victory carries historic significance for the West African Caucus, which has never before been represented in the role by a woman. 'By this feat, she represents the West African Caucus as its first female representative in that role in the history of Pan African parliamentary politics,' Dafeamekpor added.
He concluded his post with a reflection on the weight of the Agyeman-Rawlings name across the continent. 'Indeed, there is something in a name!' he wrote. Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings is the daughter of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
