Accra: Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has announced that Ghana's Parliament is now the second most open legislature in Africa, thanks to ongoing reforms aimed at increasing transparency and public engagement in parliamentary proceedings.
According to Ghana Web, Ayariga highlighted the significant progress made by the country's legislature in involving citizens more directly in its work. He spoke at a Leadership Media Briefing following the resumption of Parliament on Friday, May 22, 2026, emphasizing the strides taken to enhance public access and accountability through measures such as live broadcasts and expanded media engagement.
Ayariga expressed pride in Ghana's achievement, stating, "In Africa, we are one of the most open Parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa." He further explained the role of Ghana's parliamentary structure in these rankings, noting the distinctions between unicameral and bicameral systems, and how Ghana's unicameral Parliament is currently following the leader in transparency.
He also underscored the growing visibility of parliamentary activities due to live television coverage, which has enhanced transparency and public participation in governance. Ayariga suggested that these developments could lead to Ghana achieving the top position in future rankings.
His remarks coincide with Parliament's ongoing efforts to bolster public trust and make legislative processes more accessible to ordinary Ghanaians through digital platforms and broader media coverage.
