Accra: The First Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana adjourned sine die after completing its legislative duties on Friday, March 27, 2026. The eight-week session, which commenced on February 3, 2026, involved 32 sittings where members debated key national issues and passed significant legislation.
According to Ghana News Agency, the session saw President John Dramani Mahama fulfill the constitutional requirement by delivering the State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2026. Additionally, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, administered the oath of office to Mr. Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, the newly elected MP for Ayawaso East, following the death of the former MP, Alhaji Nasar Toure Mahama.
The Media Relations Department of Parliament reported a total of 147 questions were scheduled, with eight withdrawn. Five urgent questions and 142 oral questions were directed at ministers and state officials. Sixteen bills were introduced, with nine passed into law, while seven remain in various stages of the legislative process. Among the notable bills passed were the Ghana Deposit Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Legal Education Reform Bill, 2025.
The session also saw the maturity of three Instruments introduced in the previous meeting, including the Public Procurement (Thresholds for Approving Authorities and Procurement Methods) Regulations, 2025. The Majority Leader, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, regularly presented the Business Statement, with assistance from the Deputy Majority Leader and Majority Chief Whip.
Fifty-nine Statements were made by ministers and MPs, leading to further referrals for necessary action. The House approved disbursement formulas for several national funds, including the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and the National Health Insurance Fund for 2026.
The Parliament also ratified one Master Gas Agreement, two Contractual Agreements, and one Mining Lease Agreement. Additional business included budget performance and audit reports, with some items pending committee review.
The session concluded with closing remarks from the Majority and Minority Leaders, Mr. Ayariga and Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, respectively, who expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the MPs.
