Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has defended his government's economic management, noting that targeted policy measures have stabilised the cedi and strengthened overall economic performance.
According to Ghana Web, during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, President Mahama announced that Ghana's economy has surpassed the $100 billion mark for the first time, positioning the country among Africa's largest economies. He emphasized that currency stability was a priority, stating, "We did not arrest the dollar; we strengthened the cedi to put up a good fight against other currencies."
President Mahama disclosed that the cedi has recorded significant gains against major international currencies, appreciating by 40.7% against the US dollar, 30.9% against the British pound, and 24% against the euro. This progress is part of a wider economic recovery program that has impacted multiple sectors within the first year of his administration.
The address aligns with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, which sets out the government's priorities, policy direction, and legislative and development agenda for the year ahead.
