Accra: Senior Ghanaian workers in the mining sector in South Africa have reportedly asked to be evacuated to Ghana.
According to Ghana Web, Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, has stated that the miners are fearful for their lives due to the ongoing xenophobic attacks. The miners have reached out to him, requesting to be included in the evacuation exercise currently being organized by the Government of Ghana.
Benjamin Quashie noted that the workers communicated their concerns through their leaders, emphasizing their sense of insecurity ahead of a planned demonstration on June 30. This information was part of a post shared by DW Africa on Facebook. The High Commissioner also addressed claims by South African officials regarding the legal status of the Ghanaians being repatriated. Contrary to the assertion that only 10 out of 300 repatriated Ghanaians had proper documentation, Quashie clarified that approximately 80 of the evacuees were lawful migrants.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana continues its efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad, with plans underway to screen the next batch of 600 Ghanaians for evacuation from South Africa.
