Ghanaian Institutions Collaborate to Resolve MP’s Detention in Netherlands

Accra: The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has disclosed a coordinated effort involving Parliament and key state institutions in response to the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North in the Netherlands.

According to Ghana Web, the incident, which took place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, was promptly reported to parliamentary leadership after Dafeamekpor was informed that morning. The matter was initially escalated within Parliament before engaging authorities in the Netherlands to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the MP's detention.

Dafeamekpor, speaking on ChannelOne TV's 'The Point of View' on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, stated that the response has expanded to include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana's Embassy in The Hague, the Attorney General's Department, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Clerk to Parliament. He narrated how the Majority Leader, while in transit at Heathrow, had to travel to Schiphol to engage the detained MP for a clearer understanding of the issue.

The involvement of the Attorney General has been deemed necessary due to legal concerns related to the Rome Statute and the MP's use of a diplomatic passport. Parliament has ensured legal representation for the detained lawmaker, with a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague currently handling the case.

Dafeamekpor assured that the detained MP is in good condition and emphasized the importance of a structured and coordinated response involving all pertinent institutions. He also highlighted the need for media accuracy, noting that an authenticated copy of the arrest warrant is yet to be received.

The trip, although private, involves the use of a diplomatic passport, necessitating urgent attention from state and parliamentary bodies. Diplomatic and legal processes are underway as efforts continue to resolve the matter.
