Accra: The Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has successfully completed the replacement of vulnerable sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines. This development has enabled the resumption of water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
According to Ghana News Agency, the maintenance operation, which started on Thursday, August 6, 2026, was accomplished as planned despite facing technical and operational issues. GWL has stated that the restoration of water supply will be gradual as the transmission lines and reservoirs are filled, and operating pressures are rebuilt.
GWL noted that unless unforeseen technical challenges arise, more consumers will receive water as the system stabilizes. The ongoing water demand management and rationing program remains in effect to ensure equitable water distribution, and customers are urged to adhere to their usual rationing schedules.
Consumers are encouraged to exercise patience as the network progressively recharges, reservoirs are replenished, and water pressures are restored. Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, the Managing Director of GWL, personally inspected the works and praised the engineers, contractors, maintenance team, and technical personnel for completing the assignment on schedule.
He specifically recognized the leadership of the Lead and Chief Manager, ATMA Production, Dr. Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the Manager in charge of Operations, Mr. Michael Botse Baidoo, along with their teams. Mr. Mutawakilu highlighted the successful completion as a testament to teamwork, technical expertise, strong coordination, and committed leadership in tackling critical infrastructure challenges.
Additionally, he expressed gratitude to Mr. Kwame Kpekpena, Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and their technical team for support during the exercise. He commended the ECG team for collaborating with GWL personnel, even during night shifts, to address essential electrical and operational needs that facilitated the timely resumption of water production at Kpong.
Mr. Mutawakilu also thanked the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field personnel, support teams, and other stakeholders for their contribution to the successful intervention. GWL reassured consumers in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions that they are closely monitoring the transmission line as they progressively restore supply.
