Ghana to Engage with Burkina Faso Over Fresh Tomato Export Ban

Accra: Ghana's Government has announced plans to engage with authorities in Burkina Faso following their decision to ban the export of fresh tomatoes. This announcement comes as Ghana seeks to address the implications of the ban, which Burkina Faso enacted on March 16, 2026.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry issued a statement on Friday outlining the government's intention to hold discussions with Burkina Faso. The aim of these talks is to address concerns related to the export ban and to explore mutually beneficial solutions for both nations.

In response to the ban, Ghana has reiterated its commitment to increasing local tomato production through initiatives like the 'Feed Ghana' and 'Feed the Industry' programmes. These initiatives are designed to boost domestic tomato output to satisfy the local market demand.

The government has urged tomato traders to remain patient as efforts are made to secure a resolution. The Ministry emphasized that discussions with Burkina Faso are part of broader efforts to ensure stability and sustainability in the tomato trade between the two countries.
