Ghana Sports Ministry Denies Altering Relay Team’s Travel Schedule

Accra: The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has firmly denied any alterations to the travel schedule of Ghana's 4×100 relay team ahead of the World Athletics Relays 2026. The ministry's statement comes after several athletes, including Benjamin Azamati and Saminu Abdul Rasheed, expressed dissatisfaction with the travel arrangements coordinated by the Ministry. According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has accepted responsibility for the logistical challenges faced by the athletes. The GAA has also committed to improving travel arrangements for future international competitions to avoid similar issues. Mr. Bagbara Tanko, the Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, clarified in a statement that the responsibility for determining arrival timelines and competition preparations lies with the federations. He emphasized that the Ministry's role is limited to facilitating travel arrangements based on recommendations from the National Sports Authority and rele vant federations, adhering strictly to the approved schedules. The Ministry asserted that there was no deviation from the travel schedule submitted by the Ghana Athletics Association for the World Athletics Relays. It reiterated its commitment to supporting national teams and highlighted its intent to maintain collaboration with the National Sports Authority and federations to ensure athletes' optimal preparation. The Ministry also took the opportunity to commend the relay team for securing qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, extending its best wishes for their continued success in future competitions.
