Accra: Students of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) affiliated with or supported by members of the Law Students Network (LSN) emerged victorious in several positions during the Students' Representative Council (SRC) elections held last week. Members of the LSN won five out of the eight available Executive Council positions, including the vice-presidential position on all four campuses of the School. However, the LSN candidate for the SRC presidential position lost the election, leading the team to reassess their strategy.
According to Ghana Web, on the Green Hill Campus (GIMPA), the LSN-supported candidate, Yaw Koram Awuku-Asabre, won the vice-presidential election with 410 votes against his contender, Gifty Akosua Kpodo, who secured 174 votes. In Kumasi, Abraham Rockson Kwarteng, also from LSN, came first with 222 votes, defeating Caleb Osei Agyeman and Ronald Kwabena Ofori-Amanfo, who obtained 155 and 136 votes respectively. At the UPSA Campus, Amanda Offeibea Nyante garnered 305 votes to surpass Janet Yirbeyogr, Beatrice Borteley Randy, and Andy Terry Amoo Kwoffie, who polled 192, 155, and 102 votes respectively. On the Accra Main Campus (Makola), Nana Kwame Mensa-Abrompa Tumanyi received 299 votes, defeating Desmond Enoch Fiifi Annan and Atuahene Boadu Samuel, who obtained 272 and 179 votes respectively.
The most closely contested election was for the General Secretary position, where the LSN candidate, Alexis Laura, defeated her only contender, Abena Danquah Okai, by just four votes. The Certified Electoral Commission results indicated that Alexis Laura polled 1,291 votes, while Abena secured 1,287 votes. However, LSN candidates lost the main SRC presidential, treasurer, and organiser positions to candidates affiliated with or supported by the Legal Green Association (LGA), resulting in the next SRC Executive Council comprising five LSN members and three LGA members.
In terms of Congress, where each campus elected five members, making a total of 20, eight LSN members won across the campuses, securing two seats on each campus. LGA candidates won nine out of the 20 seats, while three candidates who were neither members of nor supported by either LSN or LGA won the remaining slots.
Meanwhile, the Law Students Network has congratulated all candidates for a successful election. In a statement issued by the group, the LSN acknowledged the immense energy, sacrifice, and resources invested throughout the electoral process, driven by a shared commitment to championing the interests of students, even at the expense of personal comfort and academic demands.
