Accra: The Ghana Police Service has made significant strides in combating crime under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu. The police force has disbanded several criminal gangs, arrested notorious criminals involved in various offenses, and received commendations for the swift apprehension of suspects.
According to Ghana Web, since IGP Yohunu's appointment, the police have arrested numerous criminals linked to gangs involved in illicit drug smuggling, armed robbery, and other serious crimes. These efforts include the resolution of crimes that occurred before Yohunu assumed leadership.
One notable success was the arrest of seven suspects connected to a highway robbery involving a Council of State member on the Tamale-Buipe Highway. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) announced this breakthrough on January 29, 2025, following intelligence-led investigations by the Police Anti-Armed Robbery Unit.
Additionally, on January 10, 2026, the Accra Regional Police Command, alongside the Eastern Regional Police Command, apprehended seven members of a notorious highway robbery syndicate. The suspects were believed responsible for a string of violent robberies across Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions. The arrests followed detailed investigations and strategic operations.
The police also made headway in the 2024 robbery of a jewellery shop in Adabraka with the arrest of several suspects. Ali Mohammed, known as "Bawasam," was apprehended while receiving medical treatment, and further operations led to the arrest of additional suspects involved in the crime.
In January 2026, the Volta Regional Command intercepted drug trafficking operations, seizing significant quantities of suspected cocaine and Indian hemp. These operations highlighted the proactive measures taken by the police to curb drug-related offenses.
The Tema Regional Police Command intercepted 1,613 parcels of suspected narcotic drugs along the Akosombo-Tema Road, showcasing the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in tackling drug trafficking.
Moreover, police in Yeji intercepted a bus carrying 396 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, further emphasizing the commitment to disrupting drug distribution networks.
In December 2025, the police intercepted over 2,000 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and other items bound for Walewale, leading to the arrest of three individuals. Similarly, in January 2026, a passenger bus with a large quantity of ammunition was intercepted, resulting in further arrests.
These significant busts and arrests reflect the Ghana Police Service's dedication to maintaining public safety and security under IGP Yohunu's leadership, with continued efforts to dismantle criminal networks across the nation.
