Accra: Ghana is set to expand access to education through Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools developed in local languages, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced. In a Facebook post, the minister highlighted his recent engagement with the Vice President of Google at the Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom, where discussions were centered on improving learning outcomes across Ghana and the wider African continent.
According to Ghana Web, the education minister disclosed that Google is collaborating with the University of Ghana to develop AI tools in local languages. This initiative aims to advance speech recognition and AI tools for Ghanaian languages, including Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani, focusing on non-standard speech to improve accessibility in education and digital services.
Haruna Iddrisu further revealed that Google has assured the government that its education tools will be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis, eliminating data cost barriers for learners. This includes curriculum-aligned content and resources on the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning, ensuring access for all learners regardless of location or income.
The partnership, as noted by the minister, reinforces Ghana's growing role as a leader in inclusive digital education and AI innovation on the African continent.
