Ghana Government to De-Risk Eight Iron Ore Blocks to Attract Investors

Tianjin: The government is determined to de-risk eight iron ore blocks earmarked for exploration to attract private investment into the development of the country's iron ore sector. The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC), William Okofo-Darteh, disclosed this on Friday, September 11, 2026, in Tianjin, China, during the China Mining Conference and Exhibition.

According to Ghana Web, Okofo-Darteh announced that the government was undertaking exploration along the iron ore corridor to de-risk the areas and create opportunities for private investors to participate in their development. He emphasized that the government is committed to exploring these areas, eliminating the need for investors to conduct initial explorations themselves. This initiative aims to open the region for iron ore development.

GIISDEC has identified and worked on other high-grade iron ore deposits in the region, including deposits with significant quantities. Okofo-Darteh mentioned that these efforts include a deposit with very high-grade iron ore, which is also available in large quantities. Another major deposit, currently held by the government, is being prepared for private investment.

The deposit is the largest iron ore resource identified in Ghana, with an estimated 1.3 billion tons, making it significant within the West African sub-region. The announcement generated interest among Chinese and other international investors attending the conference, with participants expressing willingness to explore investment opportunities in Ghana's iron ore sector.
