Accra: Team Ghana completed their campaign in the recently concluded 24th African Athletics Championships without securing a single gold medal after a five-day event held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Ghana finished in 17th place on the medal table, managing to secure only five medals, which included one silver and four bronze, despite hopes for a strong performance on home turf.
According to Ghana Web, Ghana's chance of adding a sixth medal and possibly a gold diminished on the final day of the championships when team captain Joseph Paul Amoah finished fifth in the 200m final. The women's 4x400m relay team narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth, while the men's 4x400m team struggled and ended last with a time of 3:05.14.
Ghana's medal tally included bronze medals in both the men's and women's 4x100m relay events. Alex Amankwah contributed with a bronze in the men's 800m, and Florence Agyemang secured bronze in the women's 400m. Esther Obenewaa achieved Ghana's highest accolade at the championships by winning a silver medal in the high jump.
South Africa led the medal table with a total of 18 medals, comprising nine gold, three silver, and six bronze. Kenya and Ethiopia followed in second and third positions, securing 17 and 14 medals, respectively.
