Bouaké:Ghana The latest FIFA Men's World Ranking has seen Ghana drop five places to 70th, following a challenging start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
According to Ghana Web, the Black Stars were previously ranked 65th but lost 25.73 ranking points, placing them 14th among African nations. This ranking update considered 338 men's international matches played since the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including UEFA and Concacaf Nations League matches as well as AFCON qualifiers.
Ghana's decline in rankings is attributed to consecutive defeats in their AFCON qualifiers, losing 2-0 to Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké and 4-2 at home against The Gambia. These losses left them without points from their first two matches.
The poor performance also led to the departure of coach Carlos Queiroz, who left by mutual agreement after securing just one win in seven matches. Ghana previously failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
Looking ahead, Ghana will face Somalia in back-to-back qualifiers in November, offering a chance to improve their ranking. Somalia is currently ranked 200th globally.
In the African rankings, Morocco remains the highest-ranked team on the continent, despite dropping one place to seventh worldwide. Senegal is second in Africa and 18th globally, with Egypt in 25th position.
Other notable African rankings include Algeria at 28th, Côte d'Ivoire at 29th, and Nigeria at 30th. DR Congo is 40th, Cameroon 42nd, Mali 47th, and South Africa 48th.
Globally, Spain leads the rankings, followed by Argentina, France, and England. Portugal has moved up to fifth, while Brazil has slipped to sixth.
