Accra: Ghana is set to implement a groundbreaking free e-visa regime for all African countries starting May 25, 2026. This initiative, announced by President John Dramani Mahama, aligns with his administration's broader policy to enhance regional integration and facilitate travel for Ghanaians abroad. Since assuming office in 2025, President Mahama has successfully negotiated 23 visa waiver agreements with various countries.
According to Ghana Web, President Mahama revealed this development during his closing remarks after bilateral discussions with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was on a state visit to Ghana. The talks between the two nations addressed multiple sectors, including energy, trade and investment, tourism, health, and agriculture. President Mahama underscored the significance of these visa initiatives in promoting pan-Africanism, boosting tourism, and making Ghana an attractive investment hub.
The new visa system will allow African visitors to apply for visas online at no cost, with security protocols to screen applicants. This move is part of Ghana's effort to simplify cross-border travel within Africa and strengthen its diplomatic and economic ties on the continent.
To ensure the success of these initiatives, President Mahama announced that the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation will convene biennially, complemented by regular consultations between Ghana and Zimbabwe. This combination of visa waivers and the free e-visa program demonstrates Ghana's dedication to facilitating easier travel for Africans and enhancing its international engagement.
