Accra: The outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, has revealed that bilateral trade between Ghana and China has reached an unprecedented US$15 billion, marking a significant milestone in the economic relations between the two nations. Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang shared this development on her X page following a farewell meeting with Ambassador Tong as he concluded his tenure.
According to Ghana Web, Professor Opoku-Agyemang expressed gratitude to Ambassador Tong for his efforts in enhancing Ghana-China relations. His contributions include the 0-tariff agreement and securing grants for projects like the construction of the Aflao Market and the Catholic Science and Technology University in Damongo.
The Vice President also highlighted the importance of Ghana-China relations, emphasizing the need to expand trade and strengthen people-to-people ties. She encouraged Ambassador Tong to take Ghana with him as he moves forward in his career and reaffirmed Ghana's interest in deepening bilateral connections.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the hospitality shown to President John Dramani Mahama during his visit to China, where a new blueprint for future bilateral engagements was established. She noted the importance of continuously reviewing and strengthening partnerships that are mutually beneficial in a rapidly changing world.
Looking ahead, Professor Opoku-Agyemang expressed optimism about maintaining strong cooperation with the new Chinese envoy. She eagerly anticipates continuing the collaborative efforts to advance the shared interests of Ghana and China.
