Sunyani: The Bono Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has been compelled to procure water from alternative sources for fire suppression, a reliable source from the command disclosed. This shift is necessitated by the severe pollution of the Tano River, rendering it unusable for firefighting purposes.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Tano River, particularly at the Abesim Head Works of Ghana Water Limited, has been heavily contaminated due to illegal mining activities in the area. The source emphasized that immediate action is required to protect the water body from further degradation.
"The level of pollution in the river is too much, and the service can't rely on and use the water any longer. So, the only option for us now is to buy water to suppress fire and that is too expensive, draining our coffers," the source explained.
During a recent visit, the Ghana News Agency observed extensive pollution and environmental damage to the river, which serves as the primary source of drinking water in the region. The river's condition was so dire that its water had turned a 'brownish' color. Although some workers at the Head Works were unwilling to comment, one noted that treating the polluted water has become increasingly costly.
