Paris:The French police prefecture has announced the imposition of a curfew in Paris, set to commence from 11 p.m. on October 20, 2026, until 6 a.m. on October 21, 2026. This decision, outlined in an official order published on Tuesday, restricts the movement of people in designated areas of the city during these hours.
According to Ghana News Agency, the curfew will specifically affect the Place de la Republique, although the restrictions will only apply to the square itself, leaving shops and other establishments in the area unaffected. Additionally, the curfew will extend to the region surrounding the Quartier des Halles in central Paris, impacting several streets to the south.
Authorities had previously enforced a similar curfew in Paris earlier this month, which was active during the same nighttime hours on Sunday. Comparable restrictions have also been implemented in other French cities in response to recent unrest.
The curfew comes after mass demonstrations erupted throughout France over the past weekend in response to rising living costs and declining education standards. These protests escalated into violent confrontations with law enforcement, with notable incidents including rioters setting fire to the historic city hall in Limoges and attacks on administrative buildings in Marseille and other locations. Looting also occurred, with shops and luxury boutiques in Paris and Marseille being targeted.
On Sunday, law enforcement detained over 2,000 individuals. The Interior Ministry reported that approximately 550,000 people participated in the demonstrations across the country, including 110,000 in Paris alone.
