Edinburgh: Four Ugandan athletes who disappeared following the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland have reportedly indicated plans to seek asylum for improved living conditions. Uganda's team manager, Godwin Kayangwe, had previously stated that he was unaware of the reasons behind the disappearance of the four boxers.
According to Ghana Web, the athletes, identified as boxers Ibrahim Kemis (20), Nuhu Batte (22), Emily Nakalema (32), and Angel Katushabe (21), were supposed to fly back to Uganda on August 4, 2026, but did not board their scheduled flight. Sports media outlet NBS Sports has reported that one of the missing boxers revealed their intention to seek asylum in a country believed to offer better training facilities and opportunities than Uganda.
The athletes are believed to be seeking to enhance their boxing careers by relocating to an environment that could better support their talents, allowing them to compete internationally and aim for major titles. One of the boxers has appealed to Ugandans for understanding, urging not to be judged harshly for their decision, which was made with their best interests in mind.
Meanwhile, Ugandan authorities have urged the athletes to return home and later consider making arrangements to travel to their desired destinations, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their integrity. The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded on August 2, 2026, with Uganda securing three medals: two silver and one bronze.
