Accra: The Adabraka District Court has remanded four individuals into custody for their alleged involvement in the murder of a police officer at Ablekuma in Accra. Lance Corporal Calistus Amoah was shot multiple times on June 14, 2023, during a broad daylight robbery on a Bullion Van by armed assailants at the Ablekuma Star Oil Filling Station.
According to Ghana News Agency, the accused individuals are identified as Mohammed Musah, known as On Board, a 24-year-old excavator mechanic; Muntawakilu Adamu, also called Hero, a 40-year-old excavator mechanic; Mohammed Amin Rashid, aka Iddi Amin, a 28-year-old trader; and Abila Osman Rafiu, known as Stopper, a 32-year-old businessman. The charges against them include conspiracy to commit murder and murder. Their pleas were not taken by the court, and they are scheduled to reappear on June 30, 2026.
Earlier, the defense counsel for the accused requested their discharge, arguing that they had been on remand for over two weeks with defective charges. However, the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, contended that the charges were appropriate as the accused had allegedly confessed to involvement in multiple robberies in Kumasi and Accra, with ongoing investigations.
Prosecution highlighted that through meticulous investigation, the police apprehended the suspects from different locations and brought them to Accra. The court dismissed the defense counsel's objections, and the charges and facts were read out to the accused.
The case facts reveal that the complainants are police personnel stationed at the Police Headquarters. On June 14, 2023, Lance Corporal Amoah, who was escorting a bullion van with registration number GT 1254-10, was shot and killed by armed men at the Star Oil Filling Station. The assailants made off with an AK 47 Assault Rifle.
The incident, captured on CCTV and circulated widely, depicted a white pick-up with the same registration number maneuvering out of the filling station before reversing. Two suspects on a motorbike armed with an AK47 approached the van and fatally shot Lance Corporal Amoah. Subsequently, two other armed men arrived on another motorbike, firing sporadically.
Police intelligence indicated that the robbery orchestrators were based in Accra, Kumasi, and Ashiaman, and were involved in further robberies across the country. On June 4, 2026, intelligence led to the sighting of the syndicate around Kumasi, resulting in the arrest of the four accused individuals in Suame.
Investigations revealed that a man known as Abodie, who is currently at large, sent images of AK 47 Rifles to Rafiu, the fourth accused, to find potential buyers. The prosecution informed the court that the accused had confessed to participating in multiple robberies in Kumasi and Accra. Efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining accomplices.
