Sunyani: Ghana's former Deputy Attorney General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has advocated for the formal representation of Queen Mothers in the National House of Chiefs. His remarks were made during the 7th Annual Queen Mother's workshop, organized by the Konrad Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Ghana Office, under the theme "Contemporary Role of Traditional Authorities in Ghana."
According to Ghana Web, Tuah-Yeboah emphasized the constitutional inclusion of Queen Mothers in the definition of a 'chief' and expressed his willingness to amend the Chieftaincy Act to ensure their representation at both regional and national levels. He argued that Queen Mothers are often sidelined and consulted only as a last resort, but should instead be involved throughout decision-making processes to leverage their judgment effectively. He urged Queen Mothers to unite and legally challenge their exclusion from the National House of Chiefs.
Anna Lena Sabroso-Wasserfall, the Country Representative of KAS Ghana, reiterated their commitment to enhancing democratic participation and civic education. She highlighted KAS's long-standing collaboration with Traditional Authorities, emphasizing their role in conflict prevention, social cohesion, and combating misinformation. The workshop marks the start of a new project cycle aimed at reinforcing the contemporary role of Traditional Authorities in development and inclusive participation.
Nana Yaa Ansua III, Secretary of the National Queen Mothers Association and President of the Bono Queen Mothers Platform, expressed concerns over the lack of financial support and recognition for Queen Mothers. She noted that they are often financially weakened due to being denied stipends from stool properties and face disrespect as their arbitration powers are undermined.
The KAS Ghana Office, celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, continues to be a pivotal partner in Ghana. Established in 1966, KAS has played a crucial role in fostering cooperation with Traditional Authorities across the nation.
