Kumasi: The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called upon the College of Engineering and related departments of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to develop pragmatic strategies to address the ongoing flooding issues in Ghana. This appeal was made during the launch of KNUST's 75th Anniversary and a new book about the university.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Asantehene emphasized the critical role that technical expertise must play in tackling the country's recurring floods, which have been exacerbated by inadequate waste management and insufficient public education. He stressed the importance of KNUST, as a leading science and technology institution, in equipping graduates to address challenges related to drainage design, urban planning, and waste disposal systems.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged engineers to provide practical and location-specific guidance on waste management and disposal sites, highlighting the urgency of immediate action to prevent the country from being overwhelmed by floods. He implored, "If it is still flooding and we still cannot control it, my engineers, please help me avert the situation."
In addition to addressing the flooding issues, the Chancellor praised the growth of KNUST and its vital role in national development. He acknowledged the visionaries who established the university in Kumasi and celebrated its evolution into a world-class institution advancing science, technology, and innovation. The Asantehene noted KNUST's ability to adapt, innovate, and lead in a rapidly changing world, describing its history as "a story of possibilities."
He further commended KNUST's long-term strategic vision to enhance research, embrace digital transformation, and strengthen global partnerships. While celebrating the university's achievements, he challenged it to continue addressing pressing national issues through research and innovation, especially in infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and technological advancement.
As part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations themed "From Excellence to Eminence: 75 Years of KNUST," the Chancellor urged continued investment in infrastructure, strengthening of research capacity, and fostering a culture of innovation. He encouraged students to pursue excellence with integrity and called on alumni, the government, industry, and development partners to deepen their support for the university's future growth.
