Accra: Flood recovery operations will continue until communities are restored.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, assured the public that these efforts will persist until the flood-affected communities are fully restored to their original conditions, if not improved.
The Minister highlighted that the two-day National Clean-Up Exercise was just the beginning of a more extensive sanitation campaign. During a tour of selected Assemblies in Accra, Mr. Ibrahim assessed post-clean-up operations following President John Dramani Mahama's declaration of the National Clean-Up Exercise. Substantial mop-up activities are ongoing across affected areas.
Mr. Ibrahim visited the Korle Klottey, Okaikwei North, Ga East, Adentan Municipal, and La Nkwantanang-Madina Assemblies, inspecting ongoing waste evacuation, decongestion of refuse collection points, and other sanitation interventions. He noted that despite significant progress, the scale of required work is such that it cannot be completed in two days.
'This tour is an opportunity for you to see the progress for yourselves, understand why work still remains in some locations, and appreciate the operational processes involved in ensuring that all waste is completely evacuated,' Mr. Ibrahim stated.
Mr. Ibrahim emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the Ministry's work and noted that informed media reporting would help the public understand both the progress achieved and the work that remains. The government's goal is to restore cleanliness, protect public health, and build cleaner and more resilient communities.
During his visit to the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, the Minister praised the Municipal Chief Executive for improving sanitation and promoting the use of the Madina footbridge through public education and awareness campaigns. He also commended the Assembly for beautifying the highway median with grass and employing over 100 people to maintain these green spaces.
Mr. Ibrahim encouraged other Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives to adopt similar initiatives by investing in environmental cleanliness and beautification. However, he directed the Assembly to address sanitation challenges and rehabilitate structures at the Madina Market.
At the Adentan Municipal Assembly, the Minister acknowledged the officials' efforts but urged them to intensify maintenance along major roads, especially those serving educational institutions. He encouraged collaboration between the Adentan and La Nkwantanang-Madina Assemblies to maintain shared roads and public spaces.
Mr. Ibrahim described Adentan's performance as excellent and reaffirmed the government's commitment to sustaining recovery operations until affected communities are fully restored. Recovery and sanitation works are ongoing in other Assemblies to restore and potentially improve affected communities beyond their pre-flood state.
