Accra: An Accra Circuit Court has remanded five persons into Police custody for their alleged involvement in a robbery at Nkaseim. The accused are Mahamadu Sagio, alias Jibo; Mutar Kofi; Shaibu Issah; Abdul Suleman; and Abukari Sulley, alias Taylor. They have been charged with conspiracy to rob the Nkaseim Police Station of AK47 rifles and ammunition, a gold buying company, and a cocoa buying company, during which a staff member was shot. The accused pleaded not guilty, and the court ordered them to reappear on February 19, 2026. Their alleged accomplices, Dauda, Mohammed Ali, and Hoyeefi, said to be the gang leader, are currently at large.
According to Ghana News Agency, Assistant Superintendent of Police Issah Achiburi told the court that the complainants were Police personnel stationed at the Nkaseim Police Station. The prosecution witnesses included Gershon Oppong, an employee of Adwumapa Cocoa Buying Company; Safuratu Mohammed, Branch Manager of Asutifi Rural Bank; and Seth Essel, an employee of Kobby Gold Buying Company.
ASP Achiburi detailed that Sagio was an illegal miner and resident of Nkaseim; Mutar was a commercial tricycle rider also resident in Nkaseim; Jallo sold cattle and resided at Chereponi; Suleman resided at Tanga near Karaga in the Northern Region; and Sulley sold cattle at Alabar in Kumasi. On December 2, 2025, the accused persons, armed with pump-action guns and an AK47 rifle, attacked and robbed the Nkaseim Police Station, Adwumapa Cocoa Buying Company, and Kobby Gold Buying Company. Preliminary investigations revealed that about 12 persons were involved in the operation.
ASP Achiburi explained that some suspects blocked the Gaso-Tepa road while others attacked the targeted institutions amid sporadic gunfire. The accused persons escaped with two AK47 rifles, two magazines loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition each, 150,414 Ghana cedis from the bank, 12,000 Ghana cedis from the gold buying company, and 14,000 Ghana cedis from the cocoa buying company. During the robbery, Gershon Oppong was shot and injured, but was treated and discharged at the St Elizabeth Catholic Hospital at Hwidiem. CCTV footage from the Asutifi Rural Bank was retrieved to aid investigations.
Mutar was arrested at Nkaseim and, in his caution statement, admitted the offence, stating that Sagio and his brother, Hoyeefi, involved him in the plan. Mutar used his tricycle to convey the suspects during surveillance. Mutar later led Police to arrest Sagio, who corroborated the account and said the stolen weapons were in the possession of Hoyeefi.
Sustained intelligence operations led to the arrest of Jallo at Chereponi, who admitted the offence and mentioned Sulley as an accomplice. Sulley was subsequently arrested at Alabar in Kumasi. Suleman was later identified by Sagio as his brother and arrested at Tanga near Karaga. Investigations revealed that in November 2025, Hoyeefi convinced Sagio to monitor the Nkaseim Police Station to facilitate the robbery, and Sagio later relayed the information. Hoyeefi subsequently recruited other accomplices, including Suleman, Sulley, Dauda, and Ali. Efforts are underway to arrest the suspects still at large. The case was adjourned to enable the court to secure a Moshi interpreter, as the accused persons are of Fulani descent.
