Berekum: Scores of residents, including students from the Berekum College of Education (BECOLED), have been displaced following a fire that engulfed a 10-storey building in Berekum, Bono Region. According to Ghana Web, the blaze on July 28, 2026, resulted in the loss of personal belongings such as laptops, books, academic certificates, clothing, and other valuables.
The fire has particularly affected students who were preparing to complete their studies in two months. Nana Osei Amankwaa, the building's landlord, stated that he was asleep when alerted by neighbors. Upon rushing outside, he discovered the building was already in flames. He further alleged that multiple attempts to contact the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) station in Berekum were unsuccessful. A fire tender was eventually dispatched from Sunyani, but significant damage had occurred by the time it arrived.
Prince Ofosu Agyemang, one of the affected students, expressed concerns over the loss of necessary items for completing their academic program, leaving their educational future uncertain. The victims are appealing for assistance from the government, corporate bodies, philanthropists, and the public. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.
